In a blog post from Oculus, they have said that they know gamers want to use Link without a wire–to experience the full freedom of movement offered by Quest 2 while playing the high-end titles that can only run on a gaming PC. “That’s why they’ve been working on a new streaming technology called Oculus Air Link–a completely wireless way to play PC VR content on Quest 2 using WiFi, built on the successful Oculus Link streaming pipeline.

Which is where the new v28 update comes in — they have announced that they will soon start rolling out v28 update which will not only help us play our PC VR games on Oculus Quest 2 wirelessly but it will also enable 120Hz mode.

The Airlink feature will be available in experimental mode under oculus quest settings — it will allow users to stream games and applications from their gaming PC for which you will need a 5Ghz AC or AX capable wifi router.

But they have also mentioned that as “Airlink” is a part of v28 update, it will require both your gaming PC and Quest 2, to be running of v28 software.

Although Oculus Link cables will still provide us a more robust and consistent experience but at least now those of us who have a strong Wifi setup will have a option to play PC VR titles wirelessly without buying any third party software.

The v28 update for Oculus Quest 2 will also bring 120Hz mode, currently it runs on 90Hz although when it was launched, it came with 72Hz refresh rate. So this will second increment the Quest 2’s refresh rate via update. Users of Oculus quest 2 will be able to opt into 120Hz mode by enabling it in experimental mode.

Oculus mentioned that Quest 2’s system software will remain on 90Hz but people who opt for 120Hz will be able to enjoy the increased refresh rate in apps and which support 120Hz and as it is with any other newly launched feature for any hardware, will have wait for developers to add 120Hz support in our favourite games. They also added that support 120Hz in Oculus Link will be added in future update.

With the Airlink and 120Hz, Oculus have also introduced Infinite Office, which according to them is — a collection of new features built into Oculus Home, designed to make working in VR feel more productive and flexible. Previously they introduced the ability to find and use your Bluetooth-enabled mouse or trackpad while in VR. Now they introduced physical surface integration and the ability to track your physical keyboard.
