Recently found bug in Modems from Qualcomm affects 30% smartphone users around the globe. According to a new report from a Security Firm — Check Point Research — Qualcomm’s Mobile Station Modem (MSM) can be hacked to not just record your phone calls but more. Mobile Station Modem (MSM) is an ongoing series of a 2G/3G/4G/5G-capable system on chips (SoC) designed by Qualcomm starting in the early 1990s. these MSM have always been a favourite target for hackers as they exploiting them can be as easy as sending an SMS.

Worst part is that its not just limited to recording phone calls. After exploiting this aforementioned bug, hackers can read your text messages and can even unlock your sim cards bypassing any limitation imposed by your carrier.

Now it only affects 30% of the smartphones around the globe cause, according to a report around 30% of the smartphones around the globe are running on Qualcomm’s Modem, so its 30% for all smartphones but 100% for smartphones with Qualcomm’s Modem.

The only thing we can do right now to stay safe is try our best to be on latest security patch. According to an official statement given to Tom’s Guide — They have already software fixes for the MSM exploit back in December 2020. But strangely so far none of the security patch’s changelog mentioned fix for this bug. There’s talk that Google will publicly address the exploit fix in its June security patch.
