Google released three Pixel 9 models: standard, Pro, and Pro XL. The company reintroduced the XL moniker after a seven-year hiatus, last seen on the Pixel 4 Pro XL. While the standard and Pro models have significant differences, the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL share many similarities. Moreover, the Pixel 9 Pro offers substantial upgrades compared to its predecessor.

Google Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL specifications

Google designed the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL with a similar boxy shape, flat frame, and rounded corners. The phones feature a horizontal camera bar without side extensions and a matte finish across the back panel. The camera sensors reside in a pill-shaped cutout, with the LED flash positioned outside. Both Pro models include a temperature sensor, a feature introduced in the Pixel 8 Pro.

The primary distinction between the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL lies in their displays. The Pro boasts a 6.34-inch FHD+ screen with 2,050 nits peak brightness, while the XL offers a larger 6.8-inch display with a 2,992 x 1,344 pixel resolution and 3,000 nits peak brightness. Both phones share an Actua OLED panel, a 120Hz LTPO refresh rate, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Google also upgraded the fingerprint scanner to an ultrasonic type.

Both Pixel 9 Pro models feature a triple rear camera system consisting of a 50MP main sensor with f/1.68 aperture, a 48MP ultra-wide lens, and a 48MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. A 42MP selfie camera resides on the front. Google included Magic Eraser for removing unwanted objects and Best Take for capturing perfect group photos.

Powering both phones is a Tensor G4 chipset paired with a Titan M2 security chip. Both come with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The Pixel 9 Pro houses a 4,700mAh battery, while the Pro XL packs a larger 5,060mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging. Google promises seven years of OS updates for both devices, which ship with Android 14. Leveraging Gemini AI, the phones offer features like Circle to Search, Pixel Screenshots, and Reimagine. Additionally, they include Emergency SOS and ultrawide-band technology.
